Telmo Rodriguez – Spanish Superstar Wine Maker

Telmo Rodriguez like Alvaro Palacios left the family Rioja business into which he was born to travel and learn new techniques when in 1994 he returned and set up his company in partnership with Pablo Eguzkiza they had first to look to the lesser regions of Spain to create affordable wines that created the wealth that have allowed them in recent years to develop some amazing Rioja’s whilst still producing wines across Spain.

Telmo is committed to only using native grape varieties and expressing best these wines by using bio-dynamic practises in the vineyards. He is adept at discovering lost or forgotten vineyards and bringing these back to life. All vines are bush trained which is a traditional Spanish method and allows the fruit maximum exposure to the sun whilst reducing the risk of problems such as rot or mildew.

In a recent report on Rioja by wine journalist Tim Atkin MW Telmo’s wines were amongst the highest awarded wines. His original flagship wine Alto Lanzaga 2011 was marked as 97/100 by Tim with him commenting ‘only the best parcels of Lanciego fruit, all cultivated organically, go into this wine, most of them at altitude. It’s more closed and tannic than the straight Lanzaga with more oak in evidence, but it’s freshness and chalky precision that drive the palate, supporting the dense blackberry and black cherry fruit.’

Only 2,530 bottles of this wine were produced and it is good for drinking now until 2026, we currently have four bottles left of this exceptional wine retailing at £79.99

At the next level down come Lanzaga 2009 a wine that is a blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Garnacha grown at altitude. The wine comes from 12 hectares of their own vineyards which are farmed bio-dynamically and 8 hectare of supplier’s vineyards farmed traditionally. This is still a wine of great intensity with lots of dark fruit headlined by floral notes. The wine is silky and well balanced with fine tannins. Only 27, 600 bottles were produced. This retails for £28.99

Finely we have Corriente 2014 which was awarded 90/100 by the wine advocate again it is a blend of Tempranillo with some Graciano and Garnacha but this is a more affordable wine the fruit is delicious with hint’s of berries , spice and orange peel it has good length and is drinking well now.

Telmo has some interesting projects across Spain including Rueda and Ribera del Duero and we hope to look at these wines in the future. But for now its his amazing award winning Rioja’s that we stock if you would like to try one get in soon whilst stocks last
